Cairde Sligo Arts Festival have joined forces with Hawk’s Well Theatre Sligo to offer an artist residency for a performing artist from an ethnic minority background, at any stage of their career. We are delighted to announce that this year’s recipient is Amir Abu Alrob.
Amir Abu Alrob is a Palestinian refugee and theatre maker. In 2013 they joined The
Freedom Theatre (TFT), Jenin refugee camp, Palestine and completed 4 years of study in
Theatre and Cultural Resistance. In 2017 they worked with TFT school as a facilitator,and
Performer till 2019 .They have been a part of the LGBT movement in Palestine.
In July 2019 they took a course in Character & Scene Study at The Lir, Dublin. They co-devised and performed in *The Bed during Cairde Sligo Arts Festival 2020. In October 2020 they were the recipient of the Artist in the Community bursary award for Collaborative Arts and Cultural Diversity for their project “Taa Marbuta.
For this residency, Amir has brought together collaborators Sorcha Fox, Roisín Loughrey, Dee Armstrong and Lughaidh Mayock for ‘The Road’ - a piece they have written in response to being Queer and Palestinian living in Ireland, whilst also reflecting on what is happening in Palestine currently.
*The Bed was a collaborative arts project co-created with artists Abigail Ramaabya, Amir Abu Alrob, Charmaine T. Martonsi, Donal O’Kelly, Grace Moyo, Nokwanda Siziba, Sorcha Fox in association with MASI, Hawk’s Well Theatre, Sligo Arts Service and Cairde Sligo Arts Festival. It is available to view here:
