Since the passing of the godfathers of Malian blues, Ali Farka Touré and Lobi Traoré, Boubacar 'Karkar' Traoré has emerged as the torchbearer of the genre. With a deep, husky voice suffused with nostalgia, Karkar stands as a testament to this rich tradition.

While his music is often categorized as blues in Europe, his unique, inimitable guitar technique draws inspiration from his native roots, particularly the kora, a 21-string harp-flute. In his melodies, the Niger and Mississippi seem to converge, intertwining the blues legacy of the southern United States, reminiscent of Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and Blind Willie McTell, with the essence of Malian traditional music. Traoré's compositions exude intimacy, blending simple yet refined strumming with sun-kissed, melancholic vocals. The blues sentiment in his music is further accentuated by the haunting melodies of the harmonica.
