A Visual Art Trail through Sligo town centre
With this second iteration of the Visual Artist Trail we have chosen six artists both local and international to explore themes of how our surroundings can influence our practice. Whether that be our environment, people around us or even the news that we digest - It can all have an impact on the art we create.
We have stationed exciting works using spaces dotted around Sligo town centre and invite you to enjoy art in your everyday. Featured artists in 2022 are the Sligo based BaHa collective, Cecilia Danell, Fiona Harrington, Harry Walsh Foreman, Anna Spearman and Michael Wann.

Anna Spearman
Anna Spearman is a visual artist currently based in a studio at The Model in Sligo.
Anna’s practice is multi-faceted. Her studio practice is primarily concerned with the world of materiality, and the curious and playful language inherent in the processes of both object-making and painting. Alongside this she pursues a diverse socially engaged and collaborative practice which draws on her background in community development and her interest in education.
Recent solo exhibitions include ‘…and Other Things’ Hyde Bridge Gallery, 2020 and ‘Loose Parts’ curated by Naomi Draper for the Roscommon Arts Centre, 2021.

Fiona Harrington
Fiona Harrington is a visual artist who uses handmade lace as her primary medium. She has been the recipient of the Thomas Damann Bursary, RDS Graduate Prize, National Craft Award, Eleanor De La Branchardiere Prize, Traditional Lacemakers Award and a Percent for Art Commission.
Her work has been exhibited widely, both at home and abroad. She has travelled extensively giving talks and demonstrations on Irish Lace and her MA paper on the subject, has been selected for publication in the Bloomsbury Encyclopaedia of World Textiles. She curated The Space Between, an international lace exhibition, which took place in Galway as part of European Capital of Culture.
In 2021, she represented Ireland at Doily Free Zone, an international symposium exploring contemporary lacemaking in art and design.
Most recently she was awarded the RDS Branchardiere Bursary which she is currently using to develop a new collection of work.

Michael Wann
Michael Wann was born in Dublin in 1969, and lives and works in Sligo. Having studied under Sean McSweeney at Sligo IT, he graduated with a Diploma in Fine Art in 1992, and a BA in Fine Art in 2003. Michael has exhibited his drawing-based work widely in Ireland, including solo exhibitions with the Ashford Gallery, RHA, Cross Gallery, and Draiocht in Dublin, Custom House, and Claremorris Gallery, Mayo, Solstice Arts Centre, Navan, Hamilton Gallery, and The Model, Sligo.
His drawings have been selected for the Royal Hibernian Academy's Annual Exhibition from 2004 to date. At the RHA, Michael was awarded the AXA Insurance Drawing Prize in 2006, and the ESB Sean Keating Prize and RHA Silver Medal in 2016.
In 2010 Hughie O'Donoghue selected Michael's work for the Tom Caldwell Drawing Prize, and the Inaugural Rowel Friers Perpetual Trophy at the Royal Ulster Academy's Annual Exhibition. In 2012 he was awarded a Merit Prize from the Trustees of The Golden Fleece. Michael is a Fellow of the Ballinglen Arts Foundation, and has held residencies at Cill Rialig, Co. Kerry, and the Heinrich Boll Cottage on Achill, Co. Mayo.
Michael’s work is included in private collections internationally, and has been acquired by public collections such as the Boyle Civic Collection, Waterford Municipal Collection, Office of Public Works, Mayo County Council., Fingal County Council, Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, AXA Insurance, the Ballinglen Archive, and The Niland Collection.

Harry Walsh Foreman
Harry Walsh Foreman is a visual artist living and working in Dublin. His ongoing project subtitled “Mortal Engines” utilises the visual language of contemporary graphic literature to craft tales of the humorous and absurd people and events which surround us in our daily lives. These moments in time are made in celebration of the local, the small-scale, the eccentric and the down-right ordinary. It is a search for the moments which contain a multitude of possibilities for examining the humour of the everyday.He recently completed an MFA in Painting at NCAD, graduating in 2018 and he graduated from the BA in Fine Art Painting in 2016. Recent shows include the 'Dubliners' exhibition in the 6th Biennial of painting in Zagreb, Croatia, "Mortal Engines, Vol. 4 The Pando Edition," in the Courthouse Gallery, Ennistymon,190th Annual RHA show, Highlane Gallery open 2020 and Futures: Series 3 episode 3(RHA).

Cecilia Danell (b.1985) is a Swedish artist based in Galway. Her practice is process based, where accumulated research into landscape and the psychology of place is coupled with a strong interest in materiality and making. Recent exhibitions include: ‘Tactile Terrain’ (solo) Luan Gallery, Athlone (2022), ‘Generation 2022: New Irish Painting’, Butler Gallery, Kilkenny (2022), ‘Parklife’, The Glucksman, Cork (2022), ’I Trust the Quiet’ (solo), Burren College of Art Gallery (2021), ‘Mise en scène’ Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris (2021), ‘I set a Bait for the Unknown’ (solo), Kevin Kavanagh, Dublin (2020). Danell is the 2022 recipient of the Hennessy Craig Award for painting at the RHA, the 2017 Arts Council Next Generation Award and the ESB Keating Award at the 190th RHA Annual Exhibition amongst others. Her work is in several public collections, including the Arts Council, the OPW and Trinity College. Cecilia Danell is represented by Kevin Kavanagh, Dublin, her third solo show with the gallery takes place in September.

BaHa “Catch Up”
BaHa, the 3D art collective, was formed in 2018 by three Sligo artists. In the same year, Sligo was listed as having the highest percentage of empty shop fronts in Ireland. For years, we watched emptiness take over our home. As we began creating a space for our work in the community, reopening empty spaces became an intrinsic part of BaHa’s practice. Taking over these spaces temporarily, we show the building’s potential and ask people to reimagine the empty. Primarily working with reclaimed materials, we also create experimental sound art and live sculpting performances. The themes of our work are rooted in everyday experiences and the current social climate.
“Catch Up”, is the result of all four BaHa artists, Aengus Coyne, Hannah Dobson, Adam Flynn & Ken Gunning, coming together to build a single piece, for the first time. Each artist adds their own style, experience and viewpoint to one overall image.
