Join us for a shared experience of music, spoken word and a taste of world cuisine. Borne from a desire to make connections between people and communities – Sligo Cultural Exchange and Global Kitchen are joined by poet Sorcha Fox, social entrepreneur Ruairí McKiernan and singer Mabel Chah in a celebration of diversity and solidarity.

Sligo Cultural Exchange – A Donal O’Kelly, Cairde Sligo Arts Festival and Hawk’s Well Theatre Initiative – promotes cultural sharing between members of Sligo’s artistic community and a group of people who are currently living under the Direct Provision system in Globe House.

Sligo Global Kitchen, an initiative of The Model, originally set up by artist Anna Spearman, to make connections between people and communities using the everyday rituals of cooking and eating. SGK continues to run on a regular basis at The Model.

In this very special event, we will come together to eat and chat interspersed with song, talk and spoken word.

A collaborative event between Cairde Sligo Arts Festival, the Hawk’s Well Theatre and Sligo Global Kitchen.

Sligo Cultural Exchange – A Donal O’Kelly, Cairde Sligo Arts Festival and Hawk’s Well Theatre Initiative – promotes cultural sharing between members of Sligo’s artistic community and a group of people who are currently living under the Direct Provision system in Globe House.

Sligo Cultural Exchange meets weekly for multidisciplinary creative learning & informal culture sharing sessions. The exchange has featured sean nós & swing dance, African dance, creative writing, percussion, sean nós singing, bollywood, punjabi, theatre, hip hop & rap to date & provides opportunities for mutual learning & understanding.

Sligo Global Kitchen, an initiative of The Model, originally set up by artist Anna Spearman, to link local resources with local needs and make connections between people and communities using the everyday rituals of cooking and eating.

SGK continues to run on a regular basis at The Model and is supported by The Community Foundation for Ireland and the Communities Integration Fund. Sligo Global Kitchen are also available for public events and can be contacted through their Facebook page.

Ruairí McKiernan from Cootehill in Cavan is an award winning social innovator, campaigner, consultant, writer and speaker. He is a Fulbright scholar and a Presidential appointee to Ireland’s Council of State. Ruairí is the founder of the pioneering SpunOut.ie youth organisation, a co-founder of the Uplift campaigning organisation, and part of the founding team of the A Lust For Life wellbeing movement.

Mabel Chah is a singer from Cameroon Sligo. She became involved in setting up the Global Kitchen initiative while in direct provision. She is also a member of the Sligo cathedral choir, the Sligo Gospel Choir and Sabona Community Productions, a group of actors, writers and musicians who promote integration through the arts. After two years in direct provision, she secured her refugee status and permission to remain in Ireland. She is currently studying for a Bacholar of Business Administration at Institute of Technology, Sligo.

Sorcha Fox is a writer, actor ad producer. Born in Dublin she lives and works near Manorhamilton, Co. Leitrim, Sorcha is co-director, with Donal O’Kelly, of Benbo Productions. She directed Donal O’Kelly’s new one man show;  Fionnuala – a play about the Shell Corrib Gas Project which won a Fringe First in Edinburgh in 2013 and was nominated for the Amnesty Freedom of Expression Award.  In 2014 Sorcha played the part of Molly in Ken Loach’s film – Jimmy’s Hall. She studied Drama and Theatre studies at the Samuel Beckett Centre in Trinity College Dublin.
