Me Auld China at Cairde

July 1st, 2011

We love vintage china! Me Auld China is a new business making beautiful cake stands from vintage and antique plates. This is our first visit to Sligo and we can’t wait for The Frivolous Fare which will be held in Stephens Street Car Park July 9th at 12-6pm. We’ve been in a production frenzy and have lots of new beauties.

There will be hand-made 1-tier, 2-tier, 3-tier and 4-tier stands, along with other cool vintage china. All cake stands made by Me Auld China are one-of-a-kind, ensuring your piece is truly individual and unique. The plates may come pre-loved, or with some crazing, which simply adds to their charm.

It all started with a beautiful 3-tier 1950s cake stand bought for our wedding in 2009. I fell in love with vintage cake stands from the moment I set eyes on it, but discovered they are very hard to get your hands on!! Since then I’ve been collecting vintage china plates to recreate the authentic feel of the beautiful cake stands from the past. We offer a bespoke “Pimp your Plates” service to give Granny’s plates a new lease of life, and our lovely china collection is also available to hire for weddings, tea parties or any occasion at all.

The Shelley River Boat Race

June 20th, 2011

The Shelley River Boat Race is the grand opening event at this year’s Cairde Festival and takes place on Sunday July 10th 2011 from 7 pm.

A model boat race with free circus and music entertainment along the banks of the lovely Shelley River (Garavogue). The event is open for all to join in and participate.

You can make your own boat at home or join in one of the free drop in workshops which will be held this weekend and next in Joyn Studios in Charles St. (Details of workshops below).

Detailed guidelines can be found on our website but in general:
The boat should be roughly no bigger than a shoe box and no smaller than pound of butter and made with environmentally friendly materials (recycled if possible). Prizes will be awarded for the first 3 boats to cross the finish line but we also have a prize for the most creative boat, the best traditional boat and the best recycled material category.

The race will start opposite the Velvet Lounge and end outside the Garavogue bar where all boats will be retrieved.

This is going to be a really fun event for all with free circus and musc entertainment and finishing off with a free outdoor concert by The Odd Sox Revival. We hope that you will join in – take part, make a boat or simply come along and enjoy the festivities.

All boats will need to register with the cairde fest before the race where you will be given a number and corresponding sticker to be displayed on the boat during the race. It costs 2 euro to register.
